ACTEW's water security reports and recommendations

The ACT Government has received ACTEW's final reports and recommendations on water security for the ACT region.

ACTEW's examination of potential water supply options include four key recommendations:

  1. Immediately commencing detailed planning and construction of an enlarged Cotter Dam from its current capacity of 4 gigalitres to 78 gigalitres (capital costs - approximately $145 million).
  2. Supplementing existing water extraction from the Murrumbidgee River near Angle Crossing for transfer into the Googong Reservoir (approximately $70 million).
  3. Obtaining additional water from a source not largely dependent on rainfall within ACT catchments through either:
    • the Tantangara Dam transfer option (approximately $38 million); or
    • a Water Purification Scheme (approximately $181 - $274 million).
  4. Assessing how any additional energy used may be offset through measures such as carbon offsets (e.g. planting of trees) or renewable energy capacity.
