In general, around 39 per cent of household water is used in the garden. Through water efficient gardening practices such as reducing lawn areas, mulching, drip irrigation and water wise plants, you can dramatically reduce your water consumption in the garden.

Likewise, household appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers, toilets and showers can use a lot of water. By checking the water efficiency rating when you next buy an appliance you can help save water, and save money on your water and electricity bills.  From 1 July 2006, a new national, compulsory  Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) scheme    replaced the previous voluntary 'AAAAA' labelling scheme.
